I have long had a fascination with history. We merely borrow the land we live upon for the time that we are here,
and then pass it on to those that follow, just as we inherited it from those that came before us.
For several years now, I have been working on a series which visualizes these thoughts and feelings.
The “disappearing” effect is created by superimposing several paintings, one over the other, with each completed piece
telling a story or making a historical comment.
I start with the background painting (usually a landscape) upon which I will create my intended scenario. I plan where the
“ghostly” figures and props will fall and leave space in the composition to accommodate them.
When the background is finished, I paint a separate painting of each person or object that will appear in the final artwork.
Once all of the paintings are completed, I scan each one into my computer and position them onto the background as
envisioned. I spend a great deal of time fine tuning the transparency level, size, and location of each object until I am satisfied
with the effect.
I find this process to be a rewarding and unique way to merge my love of art with my love of history.
I hope that you will enjoy the results!
